Non-permitted improvements This is really a bad idea. Installing arenas, building barns and adding living units without permits may seem like the easy/ cheap route but think about it first. Non-permitted structures can not be included in an appraisal at re-sale or re-finance time, buyers recognize they might have to tear them out (which costs) and so also don’t value them highly. Know that all the time and money you spend in this direction will not be coming back to you when you re-sell. And you might not know things which are important to design for… like don’t graze, work or stable your horses over a septic system…
In 2001, Tom rode Smartest Chic Olena to win the NRBC Open title and collected $50,000 for owner Terry Owens. At the 2001 NRHA Open Futurity, he rode Sailin Ruf to a third place finish out of 445 entries– earning over $75,000 for owner Giovanni Cioli. Sailin Ruf and Tom also won the Southwest Reining Horse Association’s Futurity in October, winning the Open there, as well. Tom has been a finalist at every major NRHA event.
In 2002, he was a member of the Gold medal winning team at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain. He also brought home an Individual Silver medal riding Conquistador Whiz.
In 2008, Tom and Ruf Hearted Jac were members of the silver medal winning US team at the FEI World Reining Championships in Manerbio, Italy. They were also eighth place individually.
In 2009, McCutcheon won the Individual final on Darlins Not Painted at the Kentucky Cup Reining competition, which served as the test event for the 2010 FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games.
Tom kicked of 2010 with a second place finish at the Cowboy Capitol Classic in March riding Chexy Dun It.
At the 2010 Adequan/USEF Open Reining Championships in July McCutcheon rode Gunners Special Nite to the Reserve Championship.
Tom is the owner of Tom McCutcheon Consulting Services, a worldwide consulting firm for the reining industry. In addition, he is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NRBC, the largest added money reining event and stallion incentive program in history. He is also co-chairman of the NRHA Professional Riders Committee.
Tom now lives at Portree Stables with his wife Elaine and their two children, Pat and Alex. Tom enjoyed a fine career as a jockey enjoying plenty of big race winners. One of his biggest wins as a jockey came on Brittany Boy in the 1987 Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. During his riding career he rode over 400 winners.
It was only natural that Tom would start training after finishing his riding career and he has steadily become one of Ireland`s top National Hunt trainers since he began in 1994. One of his first big winners was Delphi Lodge in the 1998 Power Gold Cup at the Fairyhouse Easter Meeting where he was also leading trainer. In the past 11 years Tom and his team have enjoyed many Grade 1 victories, most notably the 2004 and 2005 King George VI Chase and the 2005 Tote Sport Cheltenham Gold Cup with the Conor Clarkson owned Kicking King.
His series of winning victories continued at the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival in 2008, claiming the Jewson Novices` Handicap Chase with Finger Onthe Pulse, and in 2009 with Ninetieth Minute taking the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle.
His many Grade I successes in Ireland include the Baileys Arkle Novice Chase, the William Hill Troytown Handicap Chase and the Ladbrokes Munster National.
