Saturday was also a big day for junior riders as the nation`s top equitation riders competed in the final round of the $10,000 Calvin Klein Equitation Championship. Winning the two-phase class was Jennifer Jones of Ocala, FL. Jones rode Pacific D to the honors.
Another exciting junior class was the Prudential Pony Jumper Classic. Topping the class was Haylie Jayne of West Palm Beach, FL, who rode Ingrid to the blue. Second was awarded to Dorothy Grubb for her ride on Jiggly Puff. Grubb, daughter of Olympians Michele and Tim, also collected the small pony championship riding Strike A Pose. This was the final qualifying event for the Prudential Pony Jumper Finals, part of the Marshall & Sterling League, to be held at HITS Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, VA, October 1.
In the $25,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix 62 horse and rider combinations vied for the winner`s purse. Eight horses advanced to the jump off but it was Jeffrey Welles and Riviera who won the class with a clear round in 39.653. Welles is a two-time winner of the Crown Royal Grand Prix, having taken home the title in 1992 and 1994. Second in the Hampton Classic Grand Prix went to Kimberly Frey for her ride on Conawara. Frey will ride two mounts in Sunday`s prestigious $150,000 Crown Royal Grand Prix, presented by David Yurman.
Taking the $30,000 BestSelections.com six-year-old finals for the second consecutive year was Olympic alternate Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, this year aboard The Fly. Minikus and The carried no faults through the four rounds of competition over three days.
"There are some horses that are good horses and there are some horses that are show horses, and he really is a show horse. He really enjoys doing it," said Minikus. Minikus discovered the young jumper in Germany just over a year ago and although he took prospective buyers to see him, Minikus ended up buying him himself. The Fly has seen many rings across the country, but not until the time he spent at the Hamptons had he ever seen a turf ring the size of the grand prix field at the Hampton Classic. According to Minikus, however, it makes no difference. The Fly has no preference for venue and proved that he can win in any ring.
Minikus is a great supporter of the YJC classes, believing they filled a gap, a gap that in the past left young jumpers competing in preliminary classes against horses that "might be flexing the rule a little bit about eligibility for preliminary."
Minikus actually led both the six-year-old and five-year-old divisions going into the final round. More Thrills was the leader of the five year olds going into the YJC finals and continue to lead until he dropped a rail.
Todd Minikus attempted to ride the far four-line in a bending approach instead of straight to make it easier for Thrills, but instead the young jumper dropped a rail. That four-fault round, however, opened the door for Erin Haas, 22, who rode Soubrette to a fault-free finish and took home the $20,000 BestSelections.com five-year-old YJC finals. Haas of Chelsea, MI, explained, "There were three of us without any faults coming into this class. Margie had a rail right before me and I went clean and Todd was still able to have a clean round."
Minikus and The Fly were presented with the BestSelections.com Trophy by HRH Princess Michael of Kent who was on hand throughout the day as a representation of the YJC`s sponsor - BestSelections.com.
Haas purchased Soubrette in May of 1999 from Geoff Sutton, the owner of her trainer Laura Kraut`s old grand prix mount, Simba Run. Kraut said, "Erin had an older horse that we were looking at retiring. She was in her final year of college and she wasn`t able to show a lot but we thought a young horse would be fun as a project."
Haas describes Soubrette`s way of going as very much like a pony. She said, "She don`t like to go in a frame and don`t like being told what to do. So most of the time I let her go the way likes to go. She`s not a traditional jumper."
Haas just graduated the University of Michigan and is taking a year off from studies to apply to medical school. Although Haas purchased the mare as a project she`s having second thoughts about selling her. She said, "I`m having to much fun with her and she`s my favorite horse so I don`t know if I want to think about what we`re going to do."
