Thomason and Walters - Equine Veterinary Surgeons - Cheshire Equine Vets
We are an equine only veterinary practice based in Cheshire (UK).
Our practice, Thomason & Walters Equine Veterinary Surgeons, is a new modern equine veterinary service founded by Paul Thomason and Tom Walters; both experienced equine vets with a sound knowledge of horses of all shapes and sizes.
Thomason & Walters is an equine only veterinary partnership created by Paul Thomason and Tom Walters. We focus our efforts solely on horses; of all different shapes, sizes, breeds, uses and personalities.
Paul Thomason M.A.,Vet.M.B.,M.R.C.V.S.
Paul was born and bred in Cheshire. He qualified from Cambridge University in 1990. Whilst at Cambridge he did a lot of rowing and was a member of the Cambridge University Modern Pentathlon squad competing in national competitions (and beating Oxford in the 1987 Varsity match!). He was also a Joint Master of the Cambridge University Draghounds.
After qualifying he spent 3 years in mixed practice in the West Midlands whilst hunting, team chasing and point-to-pointing in his spare time. In 1993 Paul moved back to Cheshire working for an equine practice for 3 years before moving to the equine division of a large practice in South Cheshire where he worked for 10 years.
Paul is a keen event rider having competed in national and international competitions and is also an FEI accredited vet for the spor, in which capacity he has officiated at numerous one and three day events in recent years including Weston Park CCI**/*, Sansaw Park CCI*, Burgie CCI**/* and the Burnham Market CIC*** World Cup Qualifier. In addition he is the Hon. Vet. Surgeon at Bradwall, Arley Hall, Tetton Hall and, as of 2006, Delamere Forest horse trials.
Tom Walters MBA BVSc. M.R.C.V.S.
Tom was born and bred in Cheshire. A keen rider from a young age, he enjoyed all types of riding including BSJA, BE, Pony Club and Hunting. He represented the UK PC tetrathlon team in the USA. He qualified from Liverpool University in 2000. He spent over 4 years working for the equine division of a large practice in South Cheshire. Tom has spent further time working in Yorkshire for an equine practice. In 2005 he completed a Masters at Cranfield University, where he represented both the rugby and football teams at the respective MBA World Cups.
Tom is a keen sports photographer and is the co-founder of WRFotos, an event photography outfit, which is becoming a familiar sight at many BE and Pony Club events up and down the country. Tom still enjoys close ties with the Pony Club and BE, and continues to give his time and expertise (veterinary and photographic) at many events.
Facilities
As an ambulatory practice all our facilities are fully portable. We use the latest direct digital radiographic technology, digital ultrasound and digital endoscopic equipment. Furthermore, all our records are computerised, fully integrated and portable. This means the history, X-ray images, ultrasound and endoscopic images for every horse under our care are instantly available on site at any time.
Direct Digital Radiography
Direct digital radiography is the very latest radiographic technology resulting in X-ray images being produced on a laptop screen seconds after exposure. The images are permanently identifiable to the horse in question by the use of DICOM software and may be stored on computer or CD and can be E-mailed within minutes of being taken. Image quality is excellent and due to the speed of the system it will increase our diagnostic capabilities enormously whilst keeping time, and therefore bills to a minimum.
Digital Ultrasound
Digital ultrasound likewise gives far superior image quality to conventional machines and the system we use offers facilities for orthopaedic, reproductive and internal medical diagnostic procedures. The superior image quality facilitates more accurate diagnosis of problems thereby improving advice with regard to treatment, where appropriate. One particular advantage of digital systems is that the images can be stored on computer directly with the patients history, lab. results and photographs where appropriate.
Digital Endoscopy
Digital endoscopy provides us with a fantastic tool for diagnosing internal conditions of the horse. Usually these images have been seen via squinting down a tiny eye piece akin to using the 10p telescope at Blackpool. The latest equipment shows the images on a flat screen TV. The images are automatically stored digitally, allowing detailed monitoring of cases, this was previously only possible if the vet concerned had photographic memory. This storage technique also allows the images to be sent to specialist should a case be particularly unusual.
