The Akhal-Teke in Sport

The Akhal-Teke Horse in Dressage
The Akhal-Teke`s most famous representative is the black stallion Absent, born in 1952. He represented Russia in three separate Olympic Games, bringing home amazing five medals, including the Individual Gold in 1960 with a score of 82.4%. This is even more spectacular of an accomplishment because it was achieved under 2 different riders, very unusual in a sport requiring such intense partnership.

In the US, pure and part bred Akhal-Tekes have competed in recognized dressage competitions quite successfully, and with several outstanding representatives currently training under nationally-ranked riders including Kim and Yvonne Barteau, Kathleene Raine, and Bent Jensen, they should soon become a force to be reckoned with.

The Akhal-Teke Horse in Showjumping
The athletic ability of the Akhal-Teke truly shines in this sport, for the breed does love to jump high and go fast! The purebred stallion Arab was national showjumping champion of Russia at 16 years of age and cleared 2m 12cm in the Puissance. The purebred gelding Penteli, shown at Grand Prix in Europe, was a remarkable competitor in spite of standing just 15.2hh. The purebred Poligon set new Puissance records over five successive years, achieving a maximum height of 2m. 25 cm. When the long jump was an official competition, the Akhal-Teke stallion Perepel cleared 8m 78 cm.

In the US several pure and part breds have competed in the jumper ring. Currently the purebred stallion Kogan, owned by Dr. Tito Pontecorvo, is being trained and shown by AGA rider Susie Hutchinson on the California circuit.

The Akhal-Teke Horse in Eventing
The intense demands and variety of the three-day event are an ideal fit for the Akhal-Teke. Their incredible movement in dressage, their legendary speed and stamina for cross-country, and their immense scope and heart in show jumping lend themselves perfectly to this discipline.

In the US, the purebred stallion Sengar, bred and owned by The Akhal-Teke Stud of Staunton, Virginia, was a Grade 1 competitor and long-listed for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. There have been three USEA Grade 1 horses, 2 Grade 2, and three Grade 3, including pure and part breds. They have competed at all of the best events in the US, including Rolex Kentucky, Fair Hill, and Devon.

The Akhal-Teke Horse in Endurance Riding
The Akhal-Teke is the world`s best endurance horse, a title proven by the legendary 1935 Ashkabad-Moscow ride. Besides their incredible stamina and limitless energy, their economical movement makes for an tremendously easy ride, saving the rider`s strength.

In 2001, a team of two Akhal-Tekes completed the XP 2001, a re-creation ride of the famous Pony Express trail, covering 2000 miles in 8 weeks, with a schedule of 50-mile rides 5 days a week, with 2 rest days following. In contrast, many teams used up to 10 horses to complete the ride. An Akhal-Teke/Arabian cross has made the team representing the US in the Pan American Games in endurance as well, and there are several young purebreds and crosses in competitions across the US logging their miles. akhal-teke golden horse price in india
