Scenic Blast, The Retired Racehorse Who Changed Careers

Just like how humans don`t typically change careers when they`ve been so successful in one field, neither do racehorses. Usually a racehorse becomes extremely successful and keeps racing until they retire, at which point they live out the rest of their lives just kind of chilling, not taking on an entirely new discipline all together. That`s not the case for thoroughbred Scenic Blast though who took on his post-race life by embarking on even more achievements.

Scenic Blast Racehorse

Scenic Blast raced overseas in Japan, France and the US and won the King`s Stand Stakes with the queen watching. He won more than $2 million over the course of his racing career, which is more than what 10 average horses may be lucky to get all together.

You might think after being that successful he`d live out his life happily doing not much, but he continued racing and won three group one races in 2009 and was even named Australian Horse of the Year.

Scenic Blast Injury

Unfortunately, Scenic Blast faced an injury like so many other racehorses do during their careers. For Scenic Blast, it was a fracture in his hind leg that caused him to spend 18 long months in recovery.

A sad reality is that many racehorses that face injuries are typically put down, especially when there`s a broken or injured leg involved, simply because it is too costly or near impossible to fix the horse and get them back to the shape they were in prior to the accident. On top of that, it`s very difficult for a horse with that kind of injury to continue living and healing normally.

Luckily, Scenic Blast was not one of those. Although it`s common for thoroughbreds to just retire or have to be put down due to injury, it`s also common for them to go into other disciplines like show jumping, dressage or even sports such as polo.

More than ever now former racehorses are going into other careers entirely and succeeding immensely and this is great because it`s not good on the horses` mental health to be nearly neglected after a lifetime of racing.

For Scenic Blast, he may have been injured and may have stopped racing, but he is succeeding in his other career as a dressage and jumping horse. His owner Sharon Joyce is exciting to be writing him in these new disciplines and says he is doing very well and enjoying his new career.

More and more horses are having a future like Scenic Blast, and that`s awesome, and the more retired racehorses that are able to succeed in careers after will help promote rehoming and reusing retired racehorses that may otherwise be left by the wayside in the past.
