Around 1996, after thirty years of marriage to a true horse lover I grudgingly agreed to accompany my wife, Denise, on a brief riding holiday on a ranch in Arizona. This was the worst holiday imaginable to me at the time, but after two days in the saddle and discovering the freedom and enjoyment of riding, I have been as eager as Denise to get on a horse.

I started riding seriously about ten years ago when I bought my first Quarter horse, Rowden Willie (Wills), and at that time concentrated on trail and pleasure. I always envied the Reiners and used to spend time watching the warm ups and classes at Grantham, wondering whether I would have the courage and skill to compete alongside these experienced riders.

I soon progressed to my first Reiner – “Two T Gunpowder” (Gunner), and my first reining season was in 2004. Most reiners will know of Gunner who was a Futurity horse at the age of three and retired at the age of eighteen. Gunner was a school master and taught (and terrified) many people in his life, and was an awesome horse.

My most memorable reining achievement was in 2007 when I won the National High Point award for the Non-Pro division and also qualified for the AQHA World Show in the States, on “Chex Out This Action”. In 2008 I started competing on my new horse “SES Chic Olena,” (Ebby), and I was proud to win the National High Point award for the second year running in the Non Pro division..

I have been extremely proud to represent British Reining on the council for the past six years and I was Vice Chairman in 2006 and 2007 and took over the Chairman’s role in 2008 and have continued in 2009. I have been extremely proud of the achievements that we have all made over the past few years. The membership has increased from around sixty to approaching three hundred.

We now run our own BR shows and certainly one of my priorities has been to encourage and increase the numbers of the Green-as-Grass and Rookie level riders. At the Championship Show we had entries of around twenty to twenty five in each of the Rookie and Green-as -Grass classes.

In my private life I am Managing Director of my own estate agency and letting company which is still a full time job, and most of my evenings are spent promoting BR.

We have three daughters and six grandchildren, which most of you will have met at the shows. We have two horses, Ebby and Denise’s horse Skip, who again is often seen at the shows, not competing but hacking out. Both horses live with us at home along with our five sheep , Joe the cat and Saffy, the Labradoodle – which again most of you will know!
