Outer Banks, North Carolina Wild Horses
The population numbers of the wild horses of the Outer Banks has decreased significantly as the beach resort region increases in popularity, from a population in the thousands, the herds have decreased in size, one such herd the Corolla has only 60 horses left. The population decline is caused by numerous human factors these include an increase in roads and vacation rentals being built, destruction of the natural habitat and an increase in traffic in the area.
As with other wild horses in the USA the North Carolina herds are descendants from the Spanish explorers in the 16th century who left them behind om the beaches of North Carolina when they returned home to Spain.
Some of the herds suffer from high levels of inbreeding causing a low level of genetic diversity, the Corolla Wild Horse Fun are trying to introduce horses from the Shackleford Banks herd to the herds in North to hopefully increase the genetic diversity of some of the herds with the inbreeding problems.
There are a number of sanctuaries founded for the wild horses of North Carolina, but the horses can also be seen in some heavily populated traffic area`s but can also be seen in the saltwater cordgrass. As with all wild horses the public are recommended not to approach these wild horses.
