Horse owners, how would you feel about the following add in your local paper?
“Will remove unwanted horses from your property, FREE! Call…..”
This add is running in Idaho, in the heartland of potato country. Hay has been a HORRIBLE problem this year. Many, many people around here allowed their horses to starve to death, or turned them loose in the desert. One ranch allowed 37 horses to starve to death (the other 40 were rescued). Animal cruelty is only a misdemeanor here, with a $1000 fine, and six months in jail max.
My heart, and a good portion of my brain are completely agreeing with everyone who is posting about how wrong, sick, ect this add is. There’s also a portion of my brain that is saying, “Yeah, but is it right to allow 37 horses to starve to death…wouldn’t it have been better if they had been trasported to slaughter?” I’m able to think that with only a very “slightly” clearer conscience, since I live much closer to Canada, than Mexico. I can think, “well at least they would be slaughtered humanely in Canada (completely disreguarding the long transport time).
I don’t like this add….not in the slightest. It makes my stomach turn. Yet I’m able to see the flip side of why this add was place, and why maybe, just maybe, this add is needed…….
I own nine horses. Five of them are ones I rescued. Every single one of them will live with me until the end of their days. Some people have questioned me about how I’m so possitive I’m going to keep my horses until the end of their natural lives. I got my first horse when I was 13 years old. I have never sold one of my horses. They have lived with me, until the end of their lives. I’m in my 40’s now.
I kept them through my teen years, my college years, two divorces, five MAJOR illnesses on my part.
We will be paying off 1/2 of our 40 acre farm’s mortgage (in one big lump sum) this October. The rest, we fully expect to pay off in another 1-2 years (we are dedicated to having no mortgage).
No matter what curve balls life throws at me, I keep the horses….even if I get so sick I have to learn to re-walk (my 5 major illnesses).
Please do not question my dedication to my own horses (emails I recieved).
This question is a pure opinion question. I just wanted to know what other horse owners reaction to it would be. vermont horse property
