The first time I really felt the calling of the horse was through the old series of Fury...I wouldn`t miss that show for anything... of course I never did quite find a horse to measure up to him...lol..until Celtic!
I also read a lot of horse books as a child...Dragon will be forever etched in my mind...as well as A New Day for Dragon... Billy and Blaze were the best!
I got my first horse...a crazed animal...when I was about 8 I spent many moonlit nights just being with him unable to draw my self into the house... I was obsessed from there on...I have had many horses in my life and remember them all and could list them by name...
My mother was an avid horsewoman...she understood what the horse was thinking and was able to teach me to read their postures and expressions ....they speak very clearly if you know how to listen...
We showed horses in a sport called gymkana. Unfortunately a lot of the riders didn`t display good horsemanship and were very difficult to be around...I tend to avoid places horses will be shown to stay away from the cruelty...once you have learned horse language its very hard to not hear their plea`s for help...what`s even harder for me is when I see they have given up and are finally broke as people would describe the result...
I owned horses in Las Vegas, NV for about 15 years and it was very hard to give them up when we moved here...I didn`t know if we would get them again here and am thrilled to have them back in my life... I have found the attitude toward horses very different in the midwest versus the desert of Nevada...they have become much more like livestock out here...the look on a farmers face the first time I rushed up to their house to warn him his horses were in the corn bin and might already be foundering said it all...
