New Zealand Event Rider Jonathan Paget | Jonathan Paget (NZL) & Clifton Promise Pau (FRA) CCI 4 - CROSS COUNTRY
Jonathan was born in Wellsford, New Zealand in November 1983 before moving to Sydney, Australia in 1986. After completing his education he undertook an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and began riding at age 18 after his father moved to a rural property and bought a horse, which Jock was promptly bucked off.
So Jock went to rodeo school and applied for a working pupil role with Kevin McNab in Tamborine, Queensland. Under Kevin`s tutelage Jock progressed from never having jumped a fence, to competing at three-star level Eventing in less than two years.
After working for Kevin for three years, Jock went to Sydney and set up a business producing and competing horses in 2006.
However, an outbreak of equine influenza near Sydney in August 2007 resulted in all horse movements being halted on much of the east coast of Australia.
With no ability to ride in Australia, Jock returned to New Zealand in September 2007 to become the principal rider for Clifton Eventers at their base at Muriwai.
He competed on Clifton Promise in April 2010 in their first CCI****, the Rolex Kentucky 3DE where he finished in 27th place.
In June 2010 Jock and Clifton Promise went to the UK to prepare for the WEG. Held at Kentucky in October, the pair finished seventh. Whilst Clifton Promise returned to the UK for a well-earned rest, Jock returned to New Zealand to compete in the Spring season on several different Clifton horses based at the Clifton Eventers facility at Muriwai.
Jock returned to his Surrey base in the UK in February 2011 and was soon joined by several more talented horses to compete in the Spring season there, including Clifton Razz, Clifton Signature and Clifton Cognac.
Jock took over the ride of Clifton Lush in March 2011.
Highlights of Jock`s recent career include:
Member of the winning New Zealand London 2012 Team qualifier at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trial, run as part of the CCI*** competition. Finished in 17th place on Clifton Razz at his first CCI*** (September 2011).
Finished fifth on Clifton Lush and 12th on Clifton Promise at Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (September 2011).
Finished third on Clifton Lush at Gatcombe Open Championship (August 2011).
Member of New Zealand Silver Medal winning team at Aachen CHIO World Equestrian Festival on Clifton Promise (July 2011).
Won CIC*** at the Bramham International on Clifton Lush (June 2011).
Placed seventh with Clifton Promise out of 81 starters at WEG 2010. Would have been Silver Medal winner had he been a member of the NZ Team.
Leading event rider in New Zealand (2008/09 year).
Holder of Top Eventing Combination Award of New Zealand with Clifton Promise (2008/09 year).
Won `Eventer of the Year` title at NZ Horse of the Year Show in 2009 and 2010.
On 2012 Olympics Eventing Training Squad with Clifton Promise; one of only four New Zealand based riders included.

Jonathan McCrea`s Grand Prix career to date includes: 7th place at the 2005 $50,000 Vermont Grand Prix; 4th at the 2005 $25,000 Kentucky Fall Show; 2nd at the 2006 $30,000 Vermont Grand Prix; 11th at the 2007 $25,000 Littlewoods Grand Prix in Florida; 7th at the 2007 $30,000 Kentucky Spring Grand Prix; 10th at the 2007 $50,000 Devon Grand Prix in Florida; 7th at the $75,000 Grand Prix at Lake Placid; and 4th at the $50,000 World Cup Qualifier in Lexington, Kentucky.
Jonathan McCrea was also a member of the 2007 Irish Nationals Cup Team at Palm Beach, which placed 2nd behind Canada (ahead of the US). He recently represented Ireland in the Dublin 5-Star International.
This diversified horseman was truly one of the founding fathers of U.S. dressage. Jack is perhaps best known for his seminal contributions to the young rider program. He was a member of the founding group of the North American Young Riders? Championships in the early 1980s. The foresight of this small group, that also included Hall of Fame members Jack Fritz, Andrew De Szinay, and Donald Thackeray, in promoting and prodding to establish the NAYRC, was unparalleled in its effect on the future of U.S. dressage. The roster of competitors from NAYRCs includes many former young riders who are competing or coaching successfully at the high performance level, such as Scott Hassler, Chris Hickey, Courtney King, and Kathleen Raine. General Burton was the first chairman of the USDF Advanced Young Rider Council, served in this position from 1988 to 1998, and was made Chairman Emeritus. He helped to develop the first dressage selection criteria for the NAYRC and ran the council meetings at the annual convention efficiently and in a business-like manner.
Jack has had a profound influence on dressage judging in the U.S. over many decades as an FEI ?I? Judge, as well as serving as a technical delegate and an FEI Chief Steward. Jack Fritz said that General Burton was known for being the chief of international judges for many years. In the early 1980s, up and coming judges looked to him for guidance and mentorship. Some of today?s judges who credit him as a guiding light for dressage judging include Lois Yukins, Sarah Geikie, Cindy Sydnor, and Kristi Wysocki. His reputation as an international judge earned him the position as moderator of the AHSA judges? forums with Wolfgang Niggli. Jack Burton also served as the FEI chief steward at the NAYRC at Tempel Farms for many years, and was the overall FEI Chief Steward at this year`s NAYRC.
In a lot of ways, he was a behind-the-scenes promoter of dressage in the U.S. He was always encouraging competitors and competitions alike, frequently officiating in some form. Calm and reason were just some of his strengths.
General Burton?s interest in judging and riding led him to publish his book, How to Ride a Winning Dressage Test in 1985 and The Judge?s Guide to Step by Step Improvement in 1990. These books became very popular among competitors and judges.
Jack?s dressage career includes many other outstanding accomplishments. He chaired USDF?s founding meeting in 1973. He served as USET?S Executive Vice President from 1976 to 1985, as manager of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, and as chef d?equipe of the U.S. Dressage Team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He has been the Chairman of the Board of The Dressage Foundation since its inception in the early 1990s. In addition to all of this, he was licensed to judge dressage, dressage sport horse breeding, eventing, driving, hunters, and jumpers. With all of these achievements, I have not even mentioned what he has done for eventing in the U.S., for which he is legendary - or that he competed in the Olympic Games in both show jumping and eventing.

Born and raised in Ireland, Jonathan McCrea started riding at the age of 8. He first rode in show-jumping competitions (ponies) for Ireland in 1986 and then again in 1988. He went on as a Producer of young horses and won the 4-year-old National Championship at the Balmoral Grand Prix and Dublin Horse Show.
