Jan Kowalczyk
Born in 1941 in Drogomysl, Poland Jan Kowalczyk was winner of he Olympic gold medal in the individual showjumping competition and the silver medal in the team event at the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow. Jan Kowalczyk passed away after a long period of time of ill health on the 24th February 2020 at the age of 79.
Although winning the gold medal at the 1980 Olympics many of the worlds leading showjumping riders were not present because of the Olympic boycott placed on the Moscow games because of Russia`s invasion of Afghanistan. Below you can watch a video of Jan Kowalczyk competing at the Moscow Olympics.
Jan Kowalczyk started his riding career at the young age of 8, as well as the Moscow Olympics Jan Kowalczyk also represented Poland at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and the 1972 games in Munich. Jan Kowalczyk would also win at many of the worlds biggest showjumping venues, including Aachen, London & Rotterdam.
