The native horse breed developed in Iceland are a small pony sized horse breed, but well known for their strength and durability. The Icelandic horse breed is popular throughout the world with many of them being exported throughout Europe and the USA. In Iceland they are used for their traditional sheepherding work as well as racing, showing and leisure riding.

The breed was developed from Norse settlers in the 9th century and is often referred to in Iceland literature, the settlers used natural selection to develop the breed by natural selection and the harsh Icelandic climate also had a big impact on the Icelandic horses we see today. The breed was nearly make extinct in the 1780`s when the volcanic eruption at Laki caused the death of many of the horses living in Iceland.

Iceland is one of the most dense areas in the world with over 80,000 horses and a human population of 270,000, this means their is one horse for every three people in Iceland.
