Horse Riding Vacations - Mallorca
The Island of Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands which lie in the Mediterranean Sea just off the south-east coast of Spain. It is one of the most popular islands destinations in the World and the most popular of the Spanish islands especially among UK holiday makers, IT enjoys beautiful Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches and plenty of history and culture and all this is just 2 hours of travel on an airplane.
Even the winter months are mild which makes for a truly year round destination for a riding holiday, and with the truly spectacular scenery on view from the beautiful sandy beaches to the UNESCO World Heritage mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana all along the west coast of the island, Mallorca really is the ideal location for a European Riding holiday.
The Island`s capital of Palma De Mallorca is a truly cosmopolitan city with some cultural and architectural gems including its majestic Gothic cathedral and the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre some beautiful shopping and dining areas to visit in any weather.
The entire northwest coast is dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, is a mecca for adventure and activity holiday makers, it has Olive groves, rugged coastline, tiny villages and hamlets with plenty of wide open space for riding, cycling, walking, climbing or pretty much and type of adventuring you can think of. The East coast on the other hand is a plethora of open, sandy beaches and tourist getaways and the South of the island is a happy mix of the two, with rocky cliffs interrupted by some of the most stunning enclosed beaches and coves in Europe.
Mallorcan horses are said to have some very particular characteristics which make a Mallorcan riding holiday unique, the breed was not officially recognised until 1989 when a genealogical record was established but there were estimated to be less than 30 in existence at that time though number have dramatically increased over the past few decades. The pure breed is always black with a unique stripe of hair over the last rib bone.
Mallorca also has its own horse racing community, every week harness racing competitions take place at the Hippodrome of Son Pardo in Palma, it was built in 1965 and was Europe’s first floodlight racecourse, the most popular type of racing to take place at the course is trotting racing where the horse pulls a cart with jockey and the horse is not allowed to gallop and has been popular in Mallorca for over 200 years.
