As a kid I was blessed with a knowledgeable ‘horsey home’ and this environment gave me the chance to do everything. I can remember one Royal Show when I was about 10 years old... I won Champion Rider and had to race over to the pony club showjumping and later that evening winning a heap of the novelty events and over the next few days participating successfully in the show pony classes. My parents always insisted that I start with young ponies, so there were many lessons for me along the way. We could not afford to buy educated and experienced horses, but I was fortunate that my parents both had a good eye for a horse so with the right work we could achieve good results. We were always a great team, Mum, Dad and I and we had success in eventing, showing, showjumping, novelties and dressage. Ironically, although I competed in dressage from an early age, I was not hooked until much later…. I became fascinated with the systematic training and addicted to the feeling of training a horse to perform a new trick!
My journey has well and truly been that of a roller coaster. My husband would say "look out, anything Hayley does, she does at 100% and full steam ahead." Whatever I decide to do in life, I do. I would describe myself as passionate, determined and very, very stubborn. Some details that many would not know about me are that I play the flute and was a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, I studied both business and music, and have been a keen participant in many other sports away from the horses.
Many great horses have shaped my career but perhaps the two most influential horses (pre Europe) were Hot Gossip and Galactic. Hot Gossip (aka Demi) was a fiery tempered, red head, over grown pony mare and was the first horse I trained myself to FEI. Together we were Western Australian State Champions, Victorian State Champions, and members of the Australian Young Riders Squad. The next long lasting and outstanding partnership was with Galactic. A beautiful black gelding with only one eye and a very volatile disposition as a young horse. Together we stepped successfully from young riders to senior level and stormed through to FEI with a lot of success and fun on the way.
In my early twenties, I gained valuable experience working for Mary Hanna of Statene Park and for Jim and Emmie Schmul of Heatherton Park before starting my own business training both dressage and showjumping horses and coaching throughout Australia. I met Isabell in December 2005. I guess you could say that I spent my 20s preparing for the Games. It was a dream for as long as I can remember to.
I have dreamed of international competition for as long as I can remember but I never really believed it obtainable. I was always torn between the reality of financial security and my dreams. I had a life changing experience just prior to meeting Isabell and so when opportunity arose to see the equestrian scene in Europe, I leapt at the chance. The rest is history now.
You are only limited by what you think. Decide what you want from life and go and get it!
So now....... I live, ride and compete full time in Europe. The next big goals are the 2012 London Olympics and the World Equestrian Games in France. And still, there is so, so much to learn and achieve on the way!

Hayley Smith
Hayley Smith - Australia - EventingHayley Beresford
Hayley Beresford - Australia :- When I look at where it all started I guess there was little doubt that my future was mapped to see me eventually riding as a professional. My father, Phillip Beresford was a very successful showjumping rider in Western Australia, my mother, Jane Cooke, a successful dressage and show rider, my grandmother, Sheila Cooke, was a founder to the three day event in Australia and selector for the Australian Eventing Team for many years, my uncles, Peter Cooke, was the Chef de Equipe and is a current selector for the Australian Show Jumping Team, and Paul Cooke, is a very successful race horse owner, and finally my aunt, Fiona Holdman, manages a successful racehorse agistment centre and was very influential throughout my `showie` years. The input of my family has been more than inspirational and without their contribution and especially my parents dedication to my sport I would absolutely not be in the position I am in today. As a kid I was blessed with a knowledgeable ‘horsey home’ and this environment gave me the chance to do everything. I can remember one Royal Show when I was about 10 years old...
