DA Carmen Elektra - (*El Ghazi x On Fyre) `98 Bay Mare. Sweepstakes. This is a very talented filly. She is out of a 4 time National Top Ten English pleasure mare. (Le Fire daughter) She has a very flexy neck with good hocks and loose shoulder.
Q: When trotting, I try to change legs regularly, as much as every 10 steps or so. On one leg, my horse seems to stiffen up and slow right down. Is this because hes not used to me changing legs and will become easier for him, or do you suspect a medical reason?
I think that you will find horses stiffer on one diagonal than the other. I also know some riders who find one diagonal more difficult to rise to than the other. This may not be a medical problem, but related to the horse`s natural tendency to lead or favour going one way.
It is possible that your horse is suffering from low-grade lameness which may not be apparent when travelling in a straight line.
If you trot on a circle, you may find that any lameness will become more obvious in one direction.
You should ask someone else to watch you ride on a circle, or lunge your horse on firm ground. If in doubt, consult your vet.
If there is no lameness, I recommend that you continue to work on both diagonals, but for several minutes at a time.
