Q: Last year I purchased a 13.2hh chestnut mare. She is excellent when I groom her and feed her treats, but when I try and ride her she seems a bit uncomfortable. I think it might be her saddle, but I am worried if I get a new one, her behaviour may not change.
If your horse seems uncomfortable, then you need to have all the possible reasons checked and eliminated.
It’s true, she may not change if you get her a new saddle, but unless you look into the subject and try different possibilities, how will you know?
As horse owners, we have ethical responsibilities to look after their welfare. Carrying out these duties can be time consuming and expensive, however, it goes with the territory. You have mentioned that she naps – this could be due to lots of things, including discomfort.
Seek the help of a qualified professional, vet, physio, saddle fitter, and instructor, and get everybody working together to try and figure out what is going on. Once you know the cause, you’ll be able to work on a solution.
Once you know the cause, you’ll be able to work on a solution.
Lessons are provided in 12-week sessions, and we are now accepting students for the upcoming sessions.
There are private classes available as well as group sessions. Riders are required to wear hard-soled shoes with a small heel, certified helmets and long pants. (jeans, jodhpurs, or breeches are recommended). We will provide various sizes of helmets and all tack needed for each horse.
One make up is provided if the student cancels 24 hours in advance.
Private lessons will be scheduled around any group lessons. The time slots are on a first come first serve basis. Any rider who would like to reserve a time slot for an extended period of time must pre-pay for the session. If a rider does not show up at his/her scheduled time a refund will not be granted. If the weather is bad and the lesson is cancelled we will reschedule later in week or add it on at the end of the session.
The group lessons will run in sessions of twelve weeks each.
The groups can be anywhere from 4-7 riders, depending on indoor or outdoor arena availability. The lesson will run for one hour and the riders are expected to come at least 20 minutes before each lesson for tack up and stay for 20 minutes for cool down; or final brush off. This will allow for maximum riding time with each instructor.
Please be aware that the lesson will sometimes take longer to get started if riders are late to arrive and tack up. Treat your group members like a team and help everyone out.
