Gloria Eschenbach
Gloria Eschenbach - Germany - Dressage Rider
I live in Dubai and both my horses, since being brought here from Europe, have developed dry cracking hooves. I`ve been given a range of advice on what to use - hoof tar, hoof oil, farrier`s formula etc. What advice can you give on hoof care in what is a hot often dry environment?
This is a difficult problem as even in the UK horses can develop brittle, cracked hooves if they have susceptible hoof shape and composition.
However, many of these problems are associated with constant or repeated wetting of the hooves rather than the dry environment.
A good quality hoof oil or dressing should help to form a waterproof “seal” to help reduce evaporation of moisture from the hoof walls but this must be applied frequently to be effective.Supplements given by mouth improve horn quality by allowing stronger horn to be built but this takes six to nine months to influence the lower hoof wall.
Regular trimming and shoeing can also help reduce the formation of cracks.
