Q: I have looked at a horse with the intention to buy. The current owner tells me that he had a spine problem one year ago that was very painful, even walking proved very difficult. He is now trotting and cantering normally, although his walk still appears a bit hesitant. Should I buy him?
I would always be concerned that any significant back problem could recur. Unfortunately, without knowing exactly what the problem was, it is difficult to give any prognosis. Even if the price is ridiculously low, I recommend that you consider very carefully the position you will be in if the injury does recur.
In addition to not being able to use the horse yourself, he may prove impossible to sell on.
