I often go paddling or swimming in the local river, some people I know have been ill after swimming in it, but my horse and I have never had any problems. Is it a bad idea to be going in?
This should not be problem and can be very good for horses. You can train them to accept water, it cools their legs and can be enjoyed by them and us!
However, if people have been ill after swimming, you should check with your local authority that it is not polluted and until you are sure, do not let your horses drink it.
If there are live, healthy fish swimming around in it, the chances are it is safe.
You should ensure that you are not trespassing either in the river or gaining access to it, and avoid using it when the current is running fast.
Do not take your horse in rivers with muddy bottoms as they can become stuck in the mud and can be very difficult to extract.
