Francois Mathy Jr
fluent in French, Dutch, English and Spanish, an Economics graduate and a successful jumping rider. His name? Francois Mathy Jr.
As the son of the well-known Belgian jumping rider Francois Mathy Sr. (double bronze winner at the Montreal Olympics), Jr started riding before he could even walk, or as he himself described it, "before I was old enough to even know what I was doing."
Gaining his earliest experience on donkeys and ponies, he liked it enough to keep going. At the age of 13, Francois tried his luck on horses. In 1985 he won the Belgian Championships and from there on the jumping career start of Francois Jr was a fact. His first successful horse was Voulez-Vous, a Dutch mare. With her he won the Belgian Junior Championships as well as a gold medal at the 1985 European Championship for Juniors in Fontainbleau. After Voulez-Vous came Quel Plantero (SF, Feu Sacre), on which he won the Lummen Derby, was second in the 1993 Grand Prix of Filot and second in the Grand Prix of Vigo in 1994. Together they also won puissances in Rome, Den Bosch, Biarritz and at many other shows.
From 1995, successes came with Fior (KWPN, Wolfgang) after winning the Zuidlaren Grand Prix. In that year he also was second in the Grand Prix of Paris-Porte. Other horses that are currently in his stable are Ivoor (KWPN, Ahorn), Viktor (KWPN, Concorde) and Kannan, an eight-year-old stallion (KWPN, Voltaire) "in which I put great hopes for the future," said Mathy. "He bred 360 mares last year and I think in this year 2000 I should have my best string of horses I have had so far."
His first horse however, Quel Plantero, has been an excellent teacher for him. "He always gave 200 percent. You could always rely on him and trust him," said Mathy. "He had a fantastic brain and also was a great puissance horse. Fior is much more competitive, has a good brain, lot of scope and is nice to ride. Viktor is has a super head too and is a true fighter. I think he will be strongly competive next year." This turned out to be correct recently, as they placed third in the Mechelen Grand Prix.
All the horses are based in the Belgian village of Remouchamps, a popular Belgian tourist spot famous for its underground caves. A truly picturesque environment for a man who genuinely cares about his horses and the stable, which he runs together with his father. The property was once only a small chalet, where his grandparents came for the weekends. Later it was turned into a grainery by his grandfather, who had sold his business in the city, and grew from there into the current Mathy stables, a real family business.
Francois, of course, learned the ropes from his father but he also had the help from other riders like Mark Leone, Philippe Lejeune, Guido Dominici and Albert Voorn. Despite the influence from so many talented riders, his hero remains John Whitaker.
"I love the way he rides, so natural. I particularly like the way he communicates with all of his horses," said Mathy. "They fight for him because they trust him and he keeps them happy until they retire ... when they are 20 and still fresh! He is a fantastic horseman. Everything is always fine and he is always happy. A true example. I also admire Ludger Beerbaum for his professionalism and his perfect control of the horse."
While change is important to keep the sport fresh and thriving, Mathy is active in promoting improvement in many areas. "I think we should improve the sport on TV , but we should also look out for the horses," he said. "They need good footing, for example. As far as the Nations` Cup and World Cups are concerned, there are different opinions in any discussion. If they want to change the World Cup Qualifying system, because of more TV coverage and happier sponsors, we have to go along with it. The only problem then is the participation of riders. Riders should only be allowed to start based on their results and not based on a sponsor name."
"The IJRC (International Jumping Rider`s Club) has a few proposals on these matters," he continued. "It has been very active and has gained a great influence. It has now become a very strong intermediary between the different actors of our sport: riders, media, FEI and organizers. The fact that our sport needs better marketing is clear and the IJRC has a very important and constructive role to play in that direction."
Mathy feels that the sport should become more honest and fair all around and is determined to do whatever he can to promote that. It shows that this young athlete knows what he is talking about and keeps up-to-date with all the latest developments and technology. He is quite a wiz on the Internet - he is currently constructing a website for °curie Mathy ( francoismathy.com)- and attends the meetings of the International Jumping Rider`s Club.
Despite his active role in the equestrian community, he still finds time to practice a very balanced personal philosophy. "Good health is the most important thing. The rest you can fix. I feel that you should try to do what you want and fight for it. Family also plays an important role, as that is the stable part of your life. A happy family, parents...the people you work with are life`s nucleus."
While staying at the top levels of showjumping is difficult to balance with a healthy personal life, Mathy feels young riders can do it if they remain motivated and confident. "Keep at your job," he suggested. "Try to find good things from several riders and take from them what you need. Don`t copy, but believe in yourself. You`ll have highlights and big drops too, so you have to be very strong mentally. But, keep going!"
Wise words from a man who certainly is as versatile on, as well as off, his horse. A skillful rider on one hand, but also an intelligent academic who knows how to keep the right perspectives in life. A man who also realizes that a small country like Belgium needs big results to get to the top.
"As breeders we are certainly at the top, and we have a lot of talented young riders," Mathy said. "The problem is that the horses get sold. Fortunately our Federation is trying to come up with a new system to improve the situation."
Let`s hope this new system will put Belgium back up at the top, as was the case in 1976, when Francois Sr. won double bronze at the Olympic Games. The future will tell whether Francois Jr. will follow in his father`s Olympic footsteps. He certainly is on the right way.
