Fieldgate Stables - Halton Hills, Ontario
Fieldgate Stables was created in April, 2008 as a facility that provides an excellent boarding service with a friendly, positive atmosphere for an affordable price. Horse care is our number 1 priority, we believe that a happy horse is a healthy horse. Each horse is placed on an individualized feed program that is designed by the owner and Fieldgate to make sure your horse is getting what they need in each feeding. We offer a number of different feeds but if your horse requires a feed that we do not carry we will either order it in for you or find a compatable replacement. We work together with our vet and farrier to ensure your horse stays in top shape.
We are open to all disiplines including but not limited to western pleasure, barrels, pole bending, hunter/jumper, equitation, dressage and cross country. We have a number of different coaches that specialize in the disipline of your choice.
We include riders of all ages, from 4-61+! Adult lessons are available (days or evenings).
We have great knowledgable, approachable, friedly staff!
Fieldgate Stables is located just minutes off the 401 on Winston Churchill Blvd. (Just across from the Maple Lodge Chicken Farm) It is an easy drive from Georgetown, Oakville, Milton, Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. Easy access to the 401 & 407 and about 10 minutes from the 403 & QEW.
Our Experience
We are Susan Coxhead and Michelle Vaillancourt, a mother and daughter team, dedicated to promoting horsemanship at all levels.
Susan (Sue) has been involved in the horse business for over 25 years in various capacities from barn worker and coach to facility manager. Sue has also had a great deal of training and experience in barn management as well as all aspects of horse care and believes in continuing education to ensure the excellence of the services we provide. Teaching and focusing on the basics, Sue provides students with a solid foundation to allow them to excel in their chosen discipline and in the show ring.
Michelle started riding at the age of 5 and quickly fell in love with the horses and the sport. Michelle started part-boarding and showing when she was 10 and never looked back. Progressing from part-boarding to horse ownership at 14, Michelle dedicated herself to learning as much as she could about training and caring for horses. Michelle has worked at a number of barns from very busy school barns, where she did barn work and teaching, to more high-end "A" barns. Currently, Michelle is training several horses for showing and teaching a select number of students for our Show Team.
Our Plan for the Future
Our plan for the future is to continue to provide quality boarding services at an affordable price, which can be difficult to find so close to major urban centres and add more servics as we go.
We are holding monthly in-house themed schooling shows with a couple of fun shows added to provide variety and to reward the efforts of hard work. Our shows have been a great hit with our competitors and spectators alike. We also organize monthly activities for our clients to get to know each other and enhance the positive atmosphere at the barn.
Our facility is approximately 30 acres. The property boasts 2 great barns - the front barn and the back barn, 2 large grass fields, 2 medium sized grass fields, 4 individual padddocks, 1 recovery paddock, 1 indoor and 2 outdoor wash stalls, a pond, 1 indoor arena, 1 outdoor sandring, plenty of grazing spots and trailer parking.
Barns
The front barn is an older bank barn that has 20 stalls. This barn is mainly used for the school horses, part boarders and students. This allows the students to have their own area where they can chat and hang out. It is equiped with a grooming stall, several crosstie areas, a large tackroom, a tack stall for larger tack boxes and indoor access to the indoor arena.
The back barn is a newer barn that has larger aisles and higher ceilings. It is insulated which makes it very warm in the winter time. It has large doors which makes it cooler in the summer time when there is a breeze. If needed there are 2 large fans, one on each aisle, to help move the air around. It has a large tackroom which has room for larger tack boxes and saddle racks/bridle hooks. There is a large wash stall with hot and cold water. There is also a spot for a heat lamp for easy drying.
There is also a heated viewing lounge above the back barn which is equiped with headed washrooms and a small kitchenette. This makes it perfect for those winter riders who have spectators who want to watch their lesson, ride or just a warn place to go.
Turn out
We have 2 large 15 acre grass fields which are separated into mares and geldings. Each field is checked on a regualr basis to make sure all boards, nails and electric wires are safely secured and not going to hurt the horses. Roundbales are put out on a weekly basis to ensure the horses have enough to eat especially in the months where the grass is less nutritious. Each field has a large water trough that is filled when needed and emptied/scrubbed on a biweekly basis during the summer months.
Each field is available for hacking, this is great for conditioning or just pleasure riding. We have a few natural jumps built in each field but our plan for spring 2011 is to build a few more and create a course for those interested in cross country. We have 4 individual paddocks for if your horse needs to be turned out alone or with 1 other buddy. Each paddock has their own small water trough which is filled on a daily basis and emptied/scrubbed biweekly in the summer months. Hay is fed daily, once or twice depending on feed program and number of horses in the paddock. Paddocks are an extra charge. We also have a small recovery paddock for horses that may have been on stall rest and are going out for the first time or horses that are coming off injuries. The paddock has a small shelter and a small trough which is filled daily. This paddock is close to the barn to make it easily monitored by the staff. Hay is fed, if needed. There is no grass in this paddock. This paddock is also an extra charge.
Arenas
Our indoor arena is approx. 70 x 140, the footing is oiled peat moss which is virtually dust free. This is great for when you are riding with other people, there is no dust! We have a large variety of jumps, including barrels which are stored in the corner. We keep them out of the way so that people can use the arena for what they want to.
Our outdoor arena is 150x300, the footing is sand. We keep 1 half of the arena for flat/dressage riders and we have a course set on the other side. We have left space for the pole bending poles and barrels for those who wish to use them. We have a large variety of jumps outside as well such as; a liver pool, 3 ft roll top, planks, gates and a large amount of poles, standards and cups to allow for the jumps you want. We are currently looking into making a dressage arena with the proper measurements and letters.
Outdoor Amenities
We have a few outdoor amenities that might interest some people.
Outdoor wash bays - We have 2 outdoor wash bays, side by side, which each have there own hose. They are only operational during the months where there is no frost. They are cold water only but they are great for the summer and especially getting ready for shows there is rarely a wait for a wash bay. They have concrete footing and fenced in on 3 sides.
Pond - We have a large pond which some boarders and students like to swim their horses in, summer time only. The horses and the kids seem to love it. We have caught horses swimming in there on their own when its hot out.
Trailer Parking - We have a large area beside our indoor arena that we use as trailer parking. It is gravel footing so your truck and trailer do not get stuck.
