Q: What is an additional insured?
A: An additional insured is someone who has a connection to the insured`s activities, and is added to their policy--which gives them coverage under that policy in the event they are sued due to the insured person`s activities. For example, a farm owner leases his facility to a couple who board, teach, train, etc. Though the farm owner does not conduct any of these activities, she could still be sued if an accident occurs while the leasees are conducting their horse business on her property. Therefore, not only does she make sure these exposures are covered on her own liability policy, she also requires the leasees to have her named on their liability policy so that she has protection under that policy as well, if she is sued due to their activities on her property.
Generally there is a cost to add an additional insured to a policy, though it is quite nominal.
