A paint horse is actually a horse breed, while a pinto is a colour of a horse, the American Paint Horse breed has the pinto coloring of the coat, and descends from Quarter horses or Thoroughbred bloodlines. All American paint horses are pinto in colour, but not all pinto horses are paint horses.
