Ireland`s Olympic Veteran Damian Gardiner and Riverdance Win $15,000 Open Jumper Prix at HITS Tahoe II

MINDEN, NEVADA (July 7, 2000)-Damian Gardiner, 30, of County Mayo, Ireland, riding the Dutch mare Riverdance won the $15,000 Open Jumper Prix at HITS Tahoe II in Minden, Nevada today, taking home $4,500 for owner Tracy Miller of Rancho Sante Fe, California. Course designer William "Buddy" Brown from Wellington, Florida, set the 12-jump Round One Course for the 18 entries and had 13 riders jump clear to move on to the jump-off. Gardiner was last to go and had to beat last week`s Mini Prix winner, Jenni Martin, who was leading with a time of 41.532. Gardiner and Riverdance attacked the course and put Martin and her Ready or Not into second place by almost a full second at 40.614.
"Riverdance is eight years old and I`ve had her for about a year and a half," said Gardiner about the 17-hand bay mare. "We got her for the World Championships next year. That`s her main goal. She`s that careful. She could go to the Games this year. She could be on the team, but I think she`s a year too young. She`s a wonderful horse. She wins a lot for me and I think she`s very special." Gardiner, a member of the Irish show jumping team, competed for his country at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Riverdance competed in her first Grand Prix on July 2, the $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix at HITS Tahoe, where she had four faults and placed eighth.

Course Designer Brown, who was on the 1976 U.S. show jumping team that competed at the Olympics in Montreal, set the 15-element Round One course to include a double at Fence Four and a triple at Fence 11 with the Time Allowed at 76 seconds. Following the awards ceremony, Brown said he was pleased with the class. "I didn`t know many of these horses so I went a little bit on the easy side just to see them all jump and get a better idea of what I can do for Sunday," Brown said. "I wanted about eight or ten clean today. I got a few more than that. Sunday I`m shooting for six to eight. But personally I think in classes of smaller fields I don`t mind having more clean and a few more in the jump-off and letting them jump."

Gardiner rode two horses in the Mini Prix and went double-clear with both. E-Mail, a 7-year old gelding owned by Cheri Hartman, finished the short course in 44.396 seconds for fourth place. Third place went to Mary Tyng of Los Angeles, on Baccarat owned by China Blue Farm who was clean in the short course in 43.702. Time Allowed was 48 seconds.

"The course was good today," said Gardiner. "I told them there wouldn`t be that many clean ones but there were thirteen. I thought maybe six or seven. It`s good for competition and good for the crowd." Wind gusts during the jump-off were a plus for Gardiner`s two horses. "A little wind gets them up. It may be a little bit more difficult to ride, but they get a lot more careful."

Gardiner, who was the Leading Rider of the Year in the Cosequin U.S.Grand Prix League in 1998, currently operates Damian Gardiner Stables based at Albert Court Ltd. in Rancho Santa Fe, California, where he has 50 horses in training. He brought 24 horses to HITS Tahoe and will compete through Week II of the show, then take two weeks off, and return with one or two horses to compete in the $100,000 HITS Grand Prix on July 30.

"I love it here," he said. "I think it`s great. Tom Struzzieri, (owner and president of HITS) does a great job everywhere he goes. That`s why we came. My hat`s off to him. The footing is good. The courses are good. He`s got great course designers. And it`s just beautiful here. I`m going to come for the whole five weeks next year."

Damian Piris - Argentina

A trip by Em and Stu to Sydney February 2008 resulted in the stud purchasing the 13.3hh pony After Midnight of Astral (AI). We were very lucky given the number of enquiries as we were very keen to purchase this mare for our future breeding program. Thank-you Edwina for entrusting your precious mare to us.

After Midnight of Astral (AI) has a fabulous dam line. It is a direct line to the foundation riding pony broodmare Zephyrin Easter Bonnet (IMP). Reported in the Australian Riding Pony Journal that she was sourced in the UK for the Strapp Family by Malcolm Ansell , who produced her under saddle at the 1979 Sydney Royal. She was awarded Champion saddle pony not exceeding 14hh - the first imported riding pony to win a major event anywhere in Australia. She later went on to become a valuable broodmare.

After Midnight of Astral (AI) is sired by Deanhill Stud`s resident stallion Sandbourne Royal Ensign (IMP) the sire of our beautiful 2007 foal Deeplake Royal Symphony (pictured right).

This mare was specifically purchased for the future of our breeding program to one day become a broodmare along side Deeplake Royal Symphony. Her temperament and saddle ability quickly proved evident on the trip up North leading to much excitement as we viewed an incredible extended trot and decided she should be given the opportunity to further her saddle career. She is owned together with the Arnold-Shaw Family to have a saddle career with Laura Shaw before returning to the stud as a future broodmare.

We hope After Midnight of Astral (AI) and Deeplake Royal Symphony will play a major part of the future breeding direction for our small stud. We wish Laura much success with her saddle career.
