An elite equestrian military academy the Cadre Noir De Saumur was founded in 1828, it is one of the big four of the most prestigious classical riding academies in the world. All the instructors at Cadre Noir De Saumur are experts in classical dressage and train for the musical ride and can be seen giving equestrian displays at the biggest horse events. Cadre Noir De Saumur have a history of great dressage master passing on their skills and knowledge teaching new riders for the future.

The Saumur School of Equitation was created to provide elite training for the French cavalry, the schools teaching is based on the riding style of Francois Robichon de La Guériniere the French riding master to King Louis XV.
As the French armed forces became mechanised many of the mounted elements were disbanded after the second world war, but the international prestige of the Cadre Noir De Saumur insured its survival.
Unlike many of the other elite riding schools the Cadre Noir De Saumur use a mixture of different horse including Selle Français horses, Anglo Arabian, Hanoverians and Thoroughbreds. The Cadre Noir De Saumur also keep a number of Lusitano horses to demonstrate the 16th/17th baroque style of riding
