Great Britain has a long history of horsemanship that is ingrained in the soul of the nation, over the years the UK have produced some legendary equestrian sportsmen and women in a variety of different disciplines, here at Stableexpress we look at some of the fan favourites over the years.
David Broome
A show jumping icon David Broom was a household name for four decades. From Wales David Broome represented Great Britain on many occasions internationally including the 1960 olympics in Rome and the 1968 Mexican Olympics were he won individual bronze on both occasions, he also represented the Uk again at the 1988 Seoul Olympics were he was placed joint 4th. David Broome comes from a strong equestrian family his sister Liz Edgar was also an international showjumper and trainer, while his son Mathew Broom also followed in his farther`s footsteps as an international showjumper .
Charlotte Dujardin
A modern day equestrian superstar Charlotte Dujardin already has two Olympic individual dressage gold medals won with her horse of a life time Valegro. Charlotte Dujardin is protege of fellow team gold medallist Carl Hester and together are set to be the backbone of the British dressage team for many years to come.
Pippa Funnell
Awarded an MBE Pippa Funnell has been at the top of the world of eventing for many years winning three Olympic medals along the way. Pippa Funnell is married to fellow Great Britain William Funnell who has been a leading internal showjumper for many years. Together the pair are now looking at breeding future equestrian star`s for the United Kingdom via there stud farm Billy Stud.
The Whitakers
Never have a family dominated a sport like the Whitaker family, starting with the four brothers john, Michael, Steven and Ian. John and Michael have been the corner stone of the British national team through the eighties, nineties and noughties. All four of these brothers have had children who are also having great success in showjumping arena`s around the world, some of these Whitaker children include Ellen, Robert, Louise, Joe, William, Tom, James and Donald Whitaker.
Princess Anne
A member of the British royal family Princess Anne was a talented eventer who at the age of 21 won the indivual gold at the European Eventing Championships in 1971, in that same year she was also voted BBC sports personality of the year. Princess Anne continued to represent Great Britain in the sport of eventing for five more years winning many more titles, in 1986 she became president of the FEI until 1994. Her daughter Zara Phillips has also been a leading event rider and won medals at the European Eventing championships and the World equestrian games.
