On to college, Sonny Hine and Skip Away...
Dante Jr. is joined in the winning circle by groom Nacho and best friend Jose L. Lopez after Spectra River`s win with Jorge Chavez in the irons Dante didn’t let down on his promises to his parents and after graduated from high school, went on to college and graduated with high honors in 1994. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it. When he finished high school he knew that he had to find a job with a top trainer which he would have to wait until the winter at Gulfstream, or continue working for a Miami based trainer, or go to college in Kentucky. After a couple of faxes and a visit that included Churchill Downs, Keeneland and more that 25 farms in the Bluegrass, he was offered a scholarship to go to college. While that was a special time of his life, he was not totally satisfy because there was no doubt in his mind that he wanted to be at the track 24/7. During that time he had the great privilege of meeting Sonny Hine. Poughkeepsie and Edwin Talaverano are joining in the winning circle by owner Dr. Olaechea, Dante Sr. and Jr.He has always idolize Charlie Witthingham and while he continue to do so today, Mr. Hine ranks in his trainer’s top list almost as high. Knowing and listen stories from Sonny gave Dante lessons that he should not forget. Dante remembers when he almost convinced the Hines to take Skip Away to run in the G-I Jockey Club of Perú the main race of Perú’s International meet that had a purse of more than $375K, and that should have been an easy win for Skippy. An opportunity for Sonny to visit Perú again along with a touristic package included in the deal sounded motivating enough for the Hines. But at last they declined the invitation and Dante is glad they did, since Skippy went on to beat Cigar in the G-I Jockey Club Gold Cup.
