Now this is incredible athleticism between horse and rider, an amazing photograph of an amazing feat. In 1949 Captain Larraguibel was photographed jumping his incredible Stallion Huaso over and clearing an eight foot one inch obstacle. They set a world high jump record that still stands today. Absolutely amazing as are we being fortunate to still have a wonderful photograph recording this event.
Colonel Alberto Larraguibel Morales (May 30, 1919 - April 12, 1995) was a Chilean Army officer of Basque descent born in Angol, Chile. He remains the record holder for Puissance (high-jump) on Horseback, one of the longest-running unbroken sport records in history -- 62 years as of 2011.
Then-Captain Larraguibel broke the record for the "high-jump" at 2.47 metres (8.1 ft), riding Huaso ex-"Faithfull", at the Official International Event at Vińa del Mar, Chile on February 5, 1949. The Committee of Records ratified this record on May 28, 1949 and stated that a height of at least 2.49 metres (8.2 ft) must be cleared to beat it.
Larraguibel died in Santiago, Chile at the age of 75.
