Daniel Boone National Forest Trail Riding
The Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky was once the famed Cumberland National Forest and is the only national forest within a single state`s borders. Kentucky is filled with history and the Daniel Boone National Forest is named after one of this countries greatest frontiersmen.
Take advantage of this great heritage by taking a horse trail ride exploring the mountains, streams and valleys. The Daniel Boone trail rides have a few policies that you are required to follow. Because the trails are multi-use, ‘leave no trace and tread lightly’ policies are important to follow. There are 18 miles of trails in at Daniel Boone.
Horse camps fall into three ranger districts: Cumberland, London, Redbird and Sterns. Camp Free at the Bell Farm Horse Camp in the Sterns district offers toilets, tent pads, lantern holders, picnic tables, and fire grates for your comfort. There is also a stream for horses to water. They do not have drinking water available, so bring your own.
For the greenhorn or pampered equestrians several accommodations that are more modern can be found with hot showers, running drinkable water, lodging, and stables. These modern facilities are a short distance from Daniel Boone Forest at Barren Fork Horse Camp, D & H Western Village, Little Lick Horse Camp, Redhill Horse Camp and White Sulfur Horse Camp.
While traveling the two million acres of national forest be sure to visit and participate in the many activities available. Visit the Cumberland Falls, Yahoo Arch and Falls, the several lakes and especially the Sheltowee Trace Trail. The Sheltowee Trace Trail was named after Daniel Boone by the Shawnee Indian tribe. He was named ‘Big Turtle’ as the adopted son of Chief Blackfish.
